Umdabu waseHarare, uGutsa wafunda ukubaza noCornelius Manguma eDriefontein Mission School,kamuva waba ngumuntu wokuqala waseZimbabwe owathola umklomelo woMkhandlu waseBrithani.Umfundaze wamvumela ukuthi afundele eLondon kusuka ngo-1982 kuze kube ngu-1985, lapho athola khona idiploma yokuqoshwa eCity and Guilds yaseLondon School of Art .

UGutsa akajwayelekile phakathi kwababazi bamatshe baseZimbabwe ngobubanzi bezinto azisebenzisayo emsebenzini wakhe; izithombe zakhe eziqoshiwe zifaka insimbi, iphepha, ukhuni nezinye izinto zangaphandle.[2] Isithombe sakhe esinqobile embukisweni weNedlaw, ngo-1987, sasiqukethe utshani obushunqayo obumboza inyoni yokhuni.Ungumzala kaDominic Benhura, owafunda naye; ubuye waba ngumeluleki wabaculi abaningi abasebasha okubalwa kubo uFabian Madamombe .

Ngo-2007, uGutsa wayengomunye wabaculi abayishumi nanye bamazwe aphesheya abathunywa yiVictoria and Albert Museum, eLondon, ukukhiqiza umsebenzi wombukiso owawubizwa ngokuthi 'Amaqiniso Angakhululeki: I-Shadow of Slave Trading on Contemporary Art'.
