Welcome!

...to the ZU Wikipedia. We few active editors here, with no administrator, keep adding content relevant to Zulu culture and South Africa in general. I personally make sure there's daily activity, watch for problems, and if necessary - get help from the m:Small Wiki Monitoring Team. My main activity is technical, since I have only a beginner's understanding of isiZulu. Feel free to ask me any special questions and I'll do my best to help. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 21:23, 7 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply

Babel boxes

hlela

Before you decide to keep the two Babel boxes I added to your User page (without asking you...) - know that they add your User name to Category:User zu and Category:User en to show that you're a User who knows that language. To keep your User name out of those categories, choose Edit mode ("Hlela umthombo") for your User page and erase the line with the Babel template. If you prefer, you can make a User info box here like you did on en:User:MaejorM showing your languages and whatever other info you want to share. I don't think the ZU WP has many infoboxes, though. -- Deborahjay (talk) 21:18, 7 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply

From your recent edit on Sjava, let me explain the way to make interwiki links for other languages. See the change (in Bona umlando > Compare selected revisions) I made here on Sjava to undo the interwiki link you added to the English page. Then look at the Wikidata item d:Q47308060. It was created for the English page (en:Sjava) and I added the ZU at the lower left-hand corner of the page. The Wikidata item still needs more information added ("properties"). Keep up your good work, and feel free to ask me questions or comment. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 19:40, 13 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Deborahjay: Thank You for that explanation. Following question moved to new section MaejorM (talk) 07:10, 14 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply

Translating parameters on templates

hlela

I have a question. Are parameters on templates automatically translated from the EN Wikipedia or is there a way to edit them because they have been badly translated. For example: On the {{Infobox musical artist}} template, The parameter "birth_name" correctly translates to "Igama lokuzalwa" not "Igama wozalwa". MaejorM (talk) 07:10, 14 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply

Templates are incomplete here in the ZU WP. THis is the best of my understanding:
  • They are originally created in the ZU WP with a copy of the template's code in the main (English-language) WP. That's why all parameters' display names are initially in English.
  • To change a parameter's display name from EN to ZU, edit the template's code ("Hlela umthombo"). See the first edit to the Template:Infobox musical artist by ZU WP's pioneering User:Oisteadman.
You are gladly welcome to correct or add any translations according to your native-speaker's knowledge of isiZulu grammar and vocabulary. I (a non-speaker using only a student's EN<>ZU dictionary and GoogleTranslate) only make such changes after getting the advice of a native speaker. -- Deborahjay (talk) 10:30, 14 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply
Also - based on the correction you offered, I fixed Google Translate (!) ZU:EN igama lokuwalza = name of at birth. Where GT gives ZU:EN igama wozalwa = name of birth (?!), I just left it as-is. -- Deborahjay (talk) 10:39, 14 uNhlolanja 2018 (UTC)Reply
